Professional Licensure Requirements

For students who are considering enrolling in, or are currently enrolled in, a program that leads to professional licensure, UMaine strongly recommends that you contact the appropriate department or program to determine the educational requirements and review whether or not the education provided at UMaine will allow you to sit for the applicable licensing exam in the state where you are located or intend to later seek employment. Students who will be living on campus or in Maine are considered to be located in Maine for the purpose of meeting state licensure requirements. If your intention is to work in a state other than Maine upon graduation, the University of Maine System strongly encourages you to check into the licensure requirements in those states. Students should also consider contacting the applicable licensing board to determine any additional requirements, beyond the degree program, that may need to be fulfilled in order to obtain licensure in a particular state. Some licensing boards and states may require additional post-graduation examinations or coursework, additional experience, licensing fees, criminal background checks, or other actions prior to licensure. The UMS Licensure site provides information about licensure programs and contact information for each program.

Current and prospective students will be notified either via email or other direct communication should it be determined that they are applying to or enrolled in academic programs that may not meet the educational requirements for licensure in the state in which they are located. For this reason, it is important that students update their location should it change while completing their education (home and/or local address specifically). Current students can change or update their location address in their MaineStreet Student Center and should regularly review their location information for accuracy.
